Investors retreated on the opening bell despite good news from the Commerce Department that retail sales are off for the second straight month, heralding a
slower and more sustainable economic expansion.

Stocks fell on most major indexes, as traders returned to cash to await still more convincing news that the Federal Reserve will leave interest rates alone.
