This message was posted by Kit on June 02, 2000 :
NASDAQ, Dow Surge Ahead Signs of a cooling economy put a sizzle in both the NASDAQ and Dow on Friday. The NASDAQ surged 6.4%, buoyed by a 12% gain by JDS Uniphase [JDSU]. The Dow rose 1.3% on a 7.5% jump by Home Depot [HD]. ========================================================= Market Preview For Next Week ========================================================= Investors will be looking to Friday's release of the May Producer Price Index for further confirmation of an economic slowdown and, thus, a possible end to the Fed rate hikes for the year.
A final ruling in the Microsoft [MSFT] case is expected next week. Microsoft shares might rally following the announcement. Its largest competitors, such as Oracle [ORCL] and Red Hat [RHAT], could also receive a boost. Word On The Street "There is no question that at this point the early increase in interest rates are beginning to bite," says Michael Holland, chairman of Holland & Co. "If they stop increasing interest rates at this point, at the 6.5% level, my guess is we do have a soft landing and we probably have higher prices in stocks, as well as an economy that has slowed down but then will resume growth later in the year."
